Homeowners: There is so much more to comparing offers than looking at the average cost per kilowatt hour when exactly 500, 1,000 or 2,000 is used. The Public Utility Commission of Texas requires electric companies to provide these averages in their Electricity Facts Labels, but there are ways to manipulate the results to cause an offer to rank better on powertochoose than when the actual rate is applied to your actual usage. Lantern takes the time to request your usage history, then runs the numbers to find the rate that’s best for YOU and YOUR electricity use!
To enroll with an electric company, your credit history will be reviewed. Be sure to have your driver’s license number or social security number handy when completing your enrollment on the electricity provider’s secure site. Electricity companies have different credit requirements and change them periodically. At most, the electricity provider may request a deposit equal to two months of estimated billing.
As a Frontier Utilities customer you have access to additional benefits including various payment options, an online account manager, text balance updates and customer service support available during business hours by phone or email. Frontier Utilities' service and workplace excellence earned it the 2014 Better Business Bureau Award of Distinction.

With all this information in mind, you’re ready to search for the “right” electric company. Never settle for a company just because their name is familiar to you. This doesn’t mean that you can trust them to offer you low electric rates or that they’ll quickly restore your electricity if there’s an outage. (Remember, all electricity is delivered through the same company, so it’s up to this company to restore your electricity when there’s an outage). Instead, you’ll want to base your choice on things like pricing and the company’s customer service record. In this regard, you’ll want to learn about how many complaints people have made regarding the company you’re thinking of choosing. It may surprise you to find that some well-known Dallas electricity companies have poor scores, while companies you’ve never heard of before score quite well.
Not understanding the system, I overpaid — but I quickly grew tired of that. I decided to educate myself. Eventually, I figured out a system. My Watchdog Nation Guide to Electricity Savings is built on the idea that companies should be judged two ways — by lowest rate and by company reputation. When the stars align, the right company is obvious. (Note: This doesn’t apply to customers in mandatory electricity co-ops or municipal-owned utilities.)

9. Check out your favorite. After you find a company with a rate and contract length you like, learn more about it. One way is to do an Internet search of the company. Place the company’s name in various searches beside these search terms: scam, rip-off and complaints. If the company has a troubled history, find out before you sign up. If only a few results come up from disgruntled customers, don’t worry. But if there are several dozen, continue with a quick search of the company’s Better Business Bureau record. And then, most important, return to powertochoose.org and below the name of the company, you’ll see “Complaint Scorecard” and “Complaint History.” Click on those links and learn more about the company.
Check your current bill for the last few months to find out your average monthly usage and base your rate search on that usage level. For most Dallas residents, 1,500 kWh is about the average usage. The rates displayed by each provider are calculated based on a combination of energy rate and utility delivery charges. When you shop with ElectricityPlans.com, you can view the Plan Details and Pricing link next to each plan to determine how much you would pay for your electricity based on your actual usage for any given plan.

Since the Texas legislature deregulated the retail electricity industry in 2002, millions of Texans have chosen to compare electricity rates and switch electricity providers. Giving electric choice back to Texans has been extremely popular, with an estimated 92% of residents having switched their own electricity plans. The ability to switch electricity providers has resulted in significant savings for many Dallas customers.
If you’re searching for the cheapest electric plans in Dallas, you’ll probably notice that providers offer three different rates for each plan. These rates represent the average rate you would pay for 500, 1,000 or 2,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per month. In Texas, electricity providers are required to display these three rates for each electricity plan in order to give customers a general idea of the rates for a given usage level.
