To enroll with an electric company, your credit history will be reviewed. Be sure to have your driver’s license number or social security number handy when completing your enrollment on the electricity provider’s secure site.  Electricity companies have different credit requirements and change them periodically.  At most, the electricity provider may request a deposit equal to two months of estimated billing.
Homeowners: There is so much more to comparing offers than looking at the average cost per kilowatt hour when exactly 500, 1,000 or 2,000 is used. The Public Utility Commission of Texas requires electric companies to provide these averages in their Electricity Facts Labels, but there are ways to manipulate the results to cause an offer to rank better on powertochoose than when the actual rate is applied to your actual usage. Lantern takes the time to request your usage history, then runs the numbers to find the rate that’s best for YOU and YOUR electricity use!
When you enroll in Wise Buy Conserve 12 Plus, our 12-month fixed price plan, not only will you get the same great price for a full year, but also the convenience of automatic payments and paperless billing. Check to see if there are any special offers available. Some electricity companies offer you a special discount if you sign up for a long-term contract or continually pay your bill on time. Some companies also offer freebies (e.g. high-tech thermostats, restaurant gift cards, sports team apparel) for customers who enroll in particular plans. You should never choose a plan based on these things, because such gimmicks are rarely worth it – they don’t save you money. This is also true of plans that offer free nights or weekends, because you won’t receive the best electric rates throughout the rest of the week.

Knowing electricity rate price trend history is valuable information because the rate that you sign up for will be the rate you pay for the length of your contract.  If you moved into your home in the summer and you find yourself renewing your electricity plan every summer, you may be paying some of the highest rates offered for power all year long. It might be worth the expense to sign up for a short term plan as a stop gap measure until electricity rates are cheaper once demand isn’t as high.

Not understanding the system, I overpaid — but I quickly grew tired of that. I decided to educate myself. Eventually, I figured out a system. My Watchdog Nation Guide to Electricity Savings is built on the idea that companies should be judged two ways — by lowest rate and by company reputation. When the stars align, the right company is obvious. (Note: This doesn’t apply to customers in mandatory electricity co-ops or municipal-owned utilities.)

Fixed-rate, long-term (contract) plans provide stability in electricity rates. If market energy costs suddenly trend upward where you live, you can rest assured that you won’t have to pay more out of pocket. However, if you want to switch to a different, lower-cost plan before the end of the contract term, you’ll likely have to pay a cancellation or early termination fee.
